A musical story about grandfathers, fathers and sons
The performance Crooners is about fathers and sons, and the connection between father and son. The story explores what it's like to experience loss, and how to try to resolve it.
In the performance, there are musical numbers during which many different instruments are played. It's reassuring to see a performance that chooses to keep the same tempo all the time. The music creates different moods when the story tells something new, without the tempo changing.
The stage consists of a sandbox and a large carpet that hangs from ceiling to floor. The curtain has a cool effect where it becomes transparent when the group plays music behind it, but dense - like a back wall - in other scenes. The sand can be a symbol of many things, such as time, memories and oblivion. Much is thus open to interpretation.
Crooners is a warm-hearted performance that deals with many different topics. In the beginning, it was about a young boy trying to get to the bottom of the pattern that has characterized the men in his family. It is said that the father of the young boy is depressed and that is why he left the family. Furthermore, it is explained that the reason for this could be that his father was angry again, and so on. But as the boy explores the case, more themes emerge, such as death, war, love, memories and forgiveness.
These themes are explored in a nice, but also slightly melancholic way, which the music contributed to. It followed the storytelling, if the mood was humorous, the music built on it, if the mood was gloomy, the music also contributed to it. Both the text and the music touched the childish, and we believe that the performance is suitable for all ages, but those from 14 and above will probably understand the action better.
Crooners is a moving performance that shows well how many men think. The three men on stage mixed humor into something sad in a very good way. The audience laughed several times. Music was played when appropriate, and it was very impressive how many instruments they were able to play, when there were so few of them.
The show is suitable for those who don't get bored easily, and those who manage to keep up. It is a very good show that tells an interesting story, we would recommend it to those who want to see a relaxing show, but who also want to be moved and hear good music.
