A Mano, brilliant clay art!
With A Mano, Spain's El Patio teatro gives us a fantastic performance, characterized by creativity, talent and a touching story.
A Mano is about a small clay figure who has a desire to get away from the shop window and out into the world. His journey comes with ups and downs, as well as love and dreams. The story is surprisingly captivating and through the performance we develop an emotional bond with the little guy.
The clay figures in A Mano are played by the hands of the actors. By this we mean that they controlled the head of the character with one hand, and the rest of the body was the other hand of the director. It's amazing how they bring out body language and emotions through simple hand movements. The performance uses good aesthetic effects such as lighting and staging that make the whole thing even more realistic and visually exciting. One thing we really appreciated, and thought was clever, was that the directors wore dark clothes. This meant that we only noticed the character and the scene, and completely forgot who was behind it. An absolutely incredible feeling.
We believe that A Mano is a very fine and emotional performance. It's all the more impressive since this is their first production. A Mano is made for everyone over the age of six, but we think that it can be difficult for younger audiences to follow. A Mano incorporated humor into the story, which made it easier to enjoy for young children. However, it can still be a little too complicated for children aged six.
Still, it's a well-made performance that has really shown how captivating a puppet show can be!
Thanks to a foreign language in middle school, we were able to speak a little with El Patio Teatro in Spanish (Ola, Lea, Tracie and Anine)
