The polar bear dad review
This was a fairly long performance that was based on a true story. It's a play about the relationship between father and daughter, and how loneliness in several places in several situations for both of them affected everyday life and their relationships with others and each other. There were humorous elements, but there was also a lot of seriousness and some things could be interpreted in different ways.
After the performance, we talked to the actress and the director about what she wanted to get across with this performance. She said that she wanted to talk about loneliness, which today is a very taboo topic when "it's always about having the most friends on Facebook etc.". She said that she herself had felt a lot of loneliness growing up, but that it felt easier to present this through her father. This gave me (katinka) a good insight into the feelings and depth of this performance.
She communicated well to the audience that this was an important topic and you felt exactly what she felt. Loneliness is a big, yet taboo, topic among young people in particular, which meant that I (Katinka), when I looked around me, saw that everyone was paying very close attention. She was good at empathizing with the stories she was telling, even though the humour may not have hit us all.
She often stepped partially out of character and made direct contact with the audience. She talked to us and told us things that she wanted us to respond to. This created a kind of atmosphere in the auditorium that made several of us feel we knew her, or that we had a kind of closeness with her.
We had many points of view:
I think it was unique the way she portrayed it. - Erle Yrvin
It was brave to come forward and talk about such a taboo topic, loneliness." - Katinka Eckhoff
I thought it was cool that she told something so real, because not many people dare to do that." - Stine Skaar
It was cool that she included the audience and used it later in the performance." - Anna Bye-Ribaut
The way she presented it was a very different and unique way. This made me engaged in what she was trying to get across." - Marie Rekdal
All in all, we all have slightly divided opinions. Some thought it might be a bit long, while others liked it very much. We could relate a lot to what she said and the loneliness she explained that her father had experienced.
Greetings SUSers 2019 🙂
