What can a woman be? Is there anything today that she cannot or should not be? Is there something female and male in dance, and what will happen to gender roles in Norwegian folk dance when women in 2023 are allowed to play both roles and do the most intense "karsty"?

In Skaut, choreographer Hallgrim Hansegård and five co-creating dancers focus on the themes of covering, uncovering and controlling the body. The women both tighten and loosen their hair through bound contemporary dance and free folk dance. Skaut is a beautiful and energetic dance performance that reflects on the relationship between restrictions and freedom. Our own time is juxtaposed with history, and through dance, costume, lighting and music, the dancers search for ways to liberate themselves; from themselves, the group and society. In Norway, the skaut has been used to both control and seek freedom. Is skaut restrictive or liberating?

In the run-up to the production, Frikar talked to older female tradition bearers of both folk dance and folk costume, as well as younger women from different cultures, about restrictions on body language and clothing culture. In Norway, the skin has been used to both control and seek freedom. Can Norwegian traditions of dress and movement provide a new perspective on today's use of the hijab? The audience gets to experience five dancers who play on a wide range of expressions and who, in different ways, take control of how they are seen.

The production is co-produced with Beaivvas Samiske Nasjonalteater and Bærum kulturhus. It is supported by Kulturrådet, Fritt Ord, Sparebankstiftelsen DNB, Norsk Tipping, Eckbos Legat, Oppland/Innlandet fylkeskommune, Valdres Natur- og Kulturpark.
