WE PROTECT THE COUNTRY is a documentary lecture-performance that provides insight into the relationships between German soldiers and Norwegian women during and after the occupation. The spectator is confronted with a multimedia expression, with the dense aftertaste of archive dust."Yes we love this country..." sings 85-year-old Rudolf Geiss, one of the German soldiers who occupied Norway during World War II. WE PROTECT THE COUNTRY is a dive into the paradoxes of history. The production itself is like a memory, or something forgotten, where the ambiguous and vague are not put aside. The production moves back and forth between a sober lecture format and an abstracted and poetic atmosphere of intimacy. The spectator is confronted with a multimedia expression: Projected images and objects, audio material and performed text carry the dust of the archives with them, while the presence of the performers is reminiscent of the corporeal element in German-Norwegian relations. At times the different media are in harmony, and at times they create disharmony, but the aim is always to convey history as something tactile. Something you can touch. An object left behind. A rediscovered human being. This is thus also the story of history, or a journey into the desolate landscape between man and the history he has created.
