What if a letter could be curious?

[Bok:stave] is an interactive dance performance where children explore language and letters through body, movement and imagination. The experience begins even before the performance starts. The children are invited to create their own words – words that will accompany them on the stage and into the performance.

Through play, movement and interaction, letters are explored with the body, both alone and with others. The performance is shaped in meeting with the audience and provides room for creativity, curiosity and exploration. There is no answer here. Just letters, bodies, words and possibilities – and an invitation to discover what language can become when we play with it.

Maximum 30 participants per performance.

Stage size:
Stage size (width/depth/height): Width: min. 10.5m Depth: 19 meters Height: min. 5m to bottom edge of grid/tube for light suspension Exact measurements of the room may vary somewhat, but we are dependent on a certain depth as the room is scenographically divided into two “rooms” (in the depth direction).

Room or area specifications:
Room or area specifications: The stage room itself: A blackbox or other fully darkened room with a black, flat floor and the possibility of hanging scenography, sound and light from the ceiling (+ scenography along the walls in parts of the room). The children sit on cushions in the room (brought along), but we need 5-6 simple, black chairs available for adults in the audience. FOH/position for sound/lighting is located completely downstage in the room (behind the cushions that the children sit on). Door between foyer and stage room - need for darkening/locking: this door will be opened and closed several times during the performance while it is completely dark in the stage room, so here we need to be able to draw a curtain (or possibly a lock with double doors) to be able to enter/exit the room unnoticed along the way. Need for a side entrance to the stage room (which is not behind the audience): a performer should enter the room unnoticed via a side entrance during the performance, while it is completely dark in the room. This entrance should be located midstage or further back. Here, similar glare is also needed as described in the previous point. Room coverage: a black backdrop is needed at the very back of the stage (upstage), with a minimum distance of 0.75 m to the back wall and the possibility of walking through this in the middle of the carpet. Used to hide some scenography + dancers behind, who enter/exit with luminous letters during the performance. It is important that this carpet goes all the way down to the floor, so that no light leaks out between the curtain and the floor. Adjacent room / foyer: In addition, an adjacent room / foyer is needed where the workshop with the children is held at the very beginning of the performance. This area should have as little other noise/passage of people as possible, and should be located in the immediate vicinity of the stage.

Audience location:
On cushions on the floor, moving around in the performance.

Yes

Technical equipment (must be rented or brought):
Must be rented.

Current:
Need for sufficient power to operate the sound/lighting rig and FOH in the room (as well as dimmers if the lighting equipment provided consists of conventional lamps). In addition, we need 1 regular socket (16A/230V) near the FOH with 12 branch outlets, to be able to charge power banks for handheld scenography elements in advance of the performances.

Other equipment:
Sound: We bring a laptop/sound card and a MIDI keyboard for playing sound (from FOH).

Workshop:
Yes

Comments on the workshop:
Workshop - The workshop is an integral part of the 60-minute performance. The children are interactive for large parts of the performance.
