The independent performing arts field has often been at the forefront of challenging artistic conventions, and taking artistic risks that have elevated an entire field, including performing arts for young people. Is something about to change? Are we seeing a shift in the contemporary world, where fewer conversations and more confrontational rhetoric about art in public affect the artist's space for action?
We heard experiences from artists and artistic directors, and their thoughts on how the development of the art field is affected by the public debate. How can art continue to give us other people's realities and perspectives if artists avoid thematics because the risk is perceived as too high? What kind of field are young artists now entering? And can the Norwegian field learn from experiences in other countries, where professional communities have faced far stronger storms than we have experienced here at home? How can politics help maintain artists' willingness to take risks?
Kristė Agota Savė, Katja Lindeberg and Jon Refsdal Moe gave presentations, followed by a panel discussion led by the CEO of Scenekunstbruket Tine Valavuo Tyldum, where we put the experiences from the field in dialogue with politician Bente Estil.
