Palestine at Showbox
We are particularly pleased to be able to present two performances this year, each of which comes from Palestine and showcases Palestinian performing arts.
On Wednesday, November 27, there will be a special Palestinian focus at Showbox, with the dance company Stereo48 and Motforestillinger.
Premiere of The Promise of Revolution
Wednesday, November 27, we premiere The Promise of Revolution - Voices from Palestine with Motforestillinger.
The Promise of Revolution tells the story of The Freedom Theater in Jenin on the West Bank and includes testimonies from well-known Palestinian artists. It is a powerful depiction of life under occupation, where censorship and injustice are central. At the same time, it is a story of courage, perseverance and the power of art as a tool of resistance. The performance is a documentary theater project by Artists On The Frontline and The Freedom Theatre and is written by Zoe Lafferty, based on conversations with many Palestinian artists.
The performance will also be shown on Thursday, November 28 during the day.
Late night talk
After the performance, Marius Kolbenstvedt will talk with Somaya Elsousi, a Palestinian poet from Gaza, who has lived in Norway since 2019. She is a former free city writer in Horten, and has published four books of poetry in Arabic.
Palestinian hip hop and contemporary dance
In Within This Party - Oslo Edition, we meet four unique dancers from Palestine, who bring contemporary dance and the energetic power of hip hop to the traditional folk dance Dabkeh.
Founded by four young breakdancers from Nablus, Stereo48 combines the traditional Palestinian folk dance dabkeh with breakdance and contemporary dance to create a unique and powerful dance form. In this way, they explore how dance can be used as a strategic tool to address both social and individual issues in Palestinian society.
In doing so, they pave the way for a modern and dynamic approach to Palestinian body language and dance, rooted in both tradition and innovation. Stereo48's vision is to create a vibrant environment for dancers that allows for creativity, freedom of expression and artistic experimentation, especially in a challenging environment subjugated by a harsh political reality that imposes various restrictions. One of the most prominent is the restrictions imposed on freedom of movement.
Stereo48 will screen Within this Party - Oslo edition twice on Wednesday, November 27, at 10:00 and 13:30.
