Let your imagination change the world!

"Grandma's Fantastically Terrible Stories and Roald's Magic" is a brand new performance written by Patrik Stenseth, inspired by Roald Dahl's writing and life.

In the play we meet a boy simply called Roald, and his grandmother – who is simply useless, Roald thinks. Roald's mother has decided that he will spend the night with his grandmother in Sarpsborg. But his grandmother smells strange and would rather do as little as possible. What's more, she hates having visitors! Afraid of being bored to death, Roald decides to get his grandmother to tell him stories. She agrees to try, but it doesn't take long before Roald realizes that his grandmother is incredibly lousy at telling stories. So when she starts another story but can't finish it – Roald takes over. With Roald's imagination and a good dose of chocolate, there are no limits to where we can end up! Because suddenly the living room is filled with slimy buggers, a chocolate river, a rat neighbor and quirky creatures from other planets! Welcome to a theatre performance that celebrates the transformative power of imagination and the child in all of us.

The Sarping Roald Dahl?

Roald Dahl is one of the world's most famous children's book authors, and is behind successes such as "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The Witches", "Georg's Magic Medicine", "Mathilda", "SVK" - and many more. But did you know that Roald's father and grandparents were from Sarpsborg? Harald Dahl (1863–1920) grew up in what is now Dronningens gate in the city. At the end of the 19th century, Sarpsborg was not a city to make a career in, so together with his brother Harald went out of the country to build himself up as a ship merchant. It was in Cardiff, Wales, that his son Roald Dahl was born in 1916. Roald is said to have spoken Norwegian well and he had a close relationship with Norway throughout his childhood – including through many summer holidays with his grandparents, who helped to inspire his unique universe and characters: The book about Big Friendly Giant (The BSG), for example, is said to have been inspired by Roald's grandfather, Olaus Trulsen Dahl, who was two meters tall and a butcher. This performance is in turn inspired by Roald Dahl and freely fantasizes about how a boy with a good imagination might have experienced holidays with his grandmother.
