Scoooootch – Les Nouveaux Ballets (FR)

A rock band has had to flee their country – and now they have come here! Using tape, they try, alone and together, to create a new community on stage. The tape is unrolled, lines are drawn, circles are formed – and out of almost nothing they build small rooms and make music together.

But tape also sticks to the body... what happens then?

Through dance, physical theater and music, you will experience a rocking performance about creating a safe place, about change, about sharing – and about tearing down to start over.

And if you need tape, just shout: Sccoooootch!

In a scenographic space built in real time, the performance pays homage to an unusual material: tape. After fleeing a possible totalitarian regime, the three members of a feminist rock band attempt to create a new, participatory habitat on stage – a temporary home in exile.

As the tape is unrolled, they draw lines, mark spaces and form circles. The material takes on a life of its own – unpredictable, sticky and reluctant – and gradually attaches itself to the performers’ bodies, as if revealing an invisible social and emotional fabric between them.

From almost nothing, small structures and musical patterns emerge, where movement, theatre and sound merge. The interaction between dancer-puppeteer, actor and composer creates a playful, yet thought-provoking space where the audience is invited to reflect on concepts such as refuge, transformation and community.

With a glimmer of inspiration from women's freestyle wrestling, they eventually tear it all down - to start over, somewhere else, and perhaps in a better way.

Les Nouveaux Ballets

Established in 2016, based in Lille in northern France and named after a Dadaist joke, the company presents the performances of the artist Amélie Poirier. Nouveaux Ballets conducts interdisciplinary research and produces performances for young people and adults, as well as for younger audiences – and, more recently, for public spaces. Above all, it is the dramaturgy that sets the framework for the various performances. The relationship between the body and objects is at the heart of the company’s artistic work.
