Before dance became art, before it tried to express something, before it was a ceremony or a technique, it was a game.

In this performance, choreographer Joshua Monten looks at the basic building blocks of play: freedom and rules, ritual and surprise, adrenaline and flow.
Playing can mean acting out situations that may not be possible or permissible in daily life- to destroy and create
to destroy and create, to flirt with danger, to release energies, to experience the thrill of domination and to be dominated. The games we enjoy most are often those that have consequences and risks, games that are more than just a game, games that make our heads spin and at worst can break our hearts.

Game Theory can be performed indoors or outdoors, on the street, in a playground, gym or theater.

Co-produced with Dampfzentrale Bern (CH) and Krokusfestival Hasselt (B).

Comments to workshop:
In conjunction with our performances, we frequently offer "dance+play" workshops. The combination of dance and play is an innovative and motivating way to introduce students to contemporary dance. Each of our four dancers can lead an individual school class. After a short dance warm-up, we usually teach the students an excerpt from our performance. We then help the students to create their own game-based dance choreography, which they rehearse as groups and then perform in front of the whole class. Typical workshop length: 90 minutes.
