Capiche - Teater Manu/Unge Viken Teater
Thursday, November 28
At Showbox in 2019, we met Clas Göran for the first time, in Jo Strømgren's hit for children and adults: The Tired Man. Now he's back; as a substitute teacher!
The new production is an independent continuation of The Tired Man, in which Clas Göran is unable to get up in the morning and loses his job. In The Substitute, he's moved in with his grandmother and finally got a job.
The performance is an evening of theatrical fun in typical Jo Strømgren fashion, but beneath the surface lies a tribute to the world's invisible losers, those who are doing their best to find their place in society and contribute something important. The performance is full of physical comedy, with a hint of rebellion against rigid pedagogy and lack of imagination in the education system.
Late one morning, Clas Göran is squatting in front of the mailbox at his grandmother's house, waiting for the mail. What is the little letter hidden between all the bills? It turns out to be from school: Clas Göran has gotten a job as a substitute teacher and he starts tomorrow.
But wait a minute. It says that he will teach the subjects KRLE (Christianity, religion, beliefs and ethics), Norwegian, mathematics, PE, science, music and history! How is this actually going to work?
Clas Göran is scared stiff, but thinks it's a good idea to prepare. He pretends that his grandmother's living room is his classroom and all the stuffed animals are his students, while he tries to crucify himself in ESL, makes fruit salad in math class and does circuit training on his grandmother's living room furniture.
